<\/a><\/p>\nOn February 3rd<\/strong>, Amy and I decided to go fly a bit so I selected an airport I hadn’t been to yet, Houston County near Crockett, Texas, due north of our home airport. It wasn’t very exciting but there are always interesting things to see. Once there, we landed, adjusted our seat belts, replaced the batteries in my ANR headset and then we headed back.\u00a0 On the way back, we diverted in order to do a fly-by of Groveton Trinity County airport [33R]. They have a very nice looking hard-surfaced runway.<\/p>\n During the month of January and up until the early days of February, I had been looking in earnest for a place I could get the COVID-19 vaccine. Thanks to my sister-in-law, I finally scored an appointment. On February 4th, Amy and I drove to the Smart Financial Center in Sugarland, TX, did a drive-through in the parking lot (very nicely set up), and got my shot from Memorial-Hermann Hospital. Unfortunately, Amy being under 65 years old did not qualify to get one at this point. She did eventually get one about five weeks later.\u00a0 Getting vaccinated, of course, is a game-changer but we’re still cautious, wearing our masks every time we go out… but at least we’re starting to go out! This also means we can start exploring some of these fly-to-lunch places.<\/p>\n On February 14th, there was an (almost) unprecedented winter storm that landed in Texas. Few places were spared. Snow covered everything, by itself highly unusual. Power went out in many places; if you were lucky, it was rolling power outages. We were semi-prepared for this kind of emergency and we had backup power available, but only a little. The heaters for our house require huge amounts of electricity, and even our hot-water heaters are electric. We did have a propane stove and we used it to melt snow when we needed some water. Oh yes, water! Despite having heat tape on my above-ground water tank, pipes and the head of our water well, we didn’t have water!<\/p>\n After 3 days without water, I called up our water-well guy and was talking to him and he told me something I didn’t know: the water-pressure switch can, when it’s really cold, freeze up. That’s the bad news. The good news is, all it takes is a light tap to unstick it. Sure enough, I went outside and tapped the side of the water-pressure switch and voila! So, we were without water yet didn’t need to be. Sigh. Now we know!<\/p>\n During that time, flying was out of the question and the photo below will show you why. I didn’t take it… no one at Waverly Acres was taking off or landing with the snow on the runway… but it was passed along by a neighbor who knew someone that had overflown the area and taken some pictures.<\/p>\n It was an unforgettable and remarkable three-to-four days. On February 24<\/strong>, I did some local joy-flying, with 3 stop-n-go’s.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<\/a>February 27<\/strong>, I made a quick flight to Huntsville Airport, did a stop-n-go then returned.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n
