{"id":4928,"date":"2002-05-19T20:28:05","date_gmt":"2002-05-20T02:28:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.texas-flyer.com\/newblog\/?p=4928"},"modified":"2023-11-22T20:29:46","modified_gmt":"2023-11-23T02:29:46","slug":"bolivar-ferry-and-lighthouse_","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.texas-flyer.com\/newblog\/?p=4928","title":{"rendered":"Bolivar Ferry and Lighthouse_"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">May 19, 2002<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On Sunday I had a much more modest goal than usual, to visit the tip of the Bolivar Peninsula and take photos of the Lighthouse from the air.<\/p>\n<p>The day was stunning: a perfect day for ultralights. Low winds, few thermals, cool air, blue skies. It doesn&#8217;t get much better than that!<\/p>\n<p>The difficulty in this particular flight was avoiding congested areas as well as the Class-E-to-the-surface around Scholes Field (Galveston&#8217;s airport)<\/p>\n<p>You can see from the map that I skirted the Class E. It also looks like I took a route that involved more water overflight than was necessary. Originally I figured heading toward Pelican Island would be best, but when I was flying, it simply &#8220;felt&#8221; too close to Scholes Field to be comfortable, so I opted to fly along the Texas City Dike. In an engine-out, there aren&#8217;t very many places on the Dike I could have landed, but, still, it felt more secure than just being over water.<\/p>\n<p>There is a major shipping channel that parallels the Dike (which was almost directly below me when I took this picture).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.texas-flyer.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2002\/05\/channel.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1445\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.texas-flyer.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2002\/05\/channel.jpg?resize=660%2C503&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"503\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.texas-flyer.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2002\/05\/channel.jpg?w=816&amp;ssl=1 816w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.texas-flyer.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2002\/05\/channel.jpg?resize=150%2C114&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.texas-flyer.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2002\/05\/channel.jpg?resize=300%2C229&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.texas-flyer.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2002\/05\/channel.jpg?resize=768%2C585&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAs I rounded the point, it was very dramatic to see the entire end of the peninsula with the ferry boats right below. It was fun not to be in that long line of traffic waiting to load onto the ferry. Looking to my left, I can easily see the causeway and bridge which connect Galveston Island to the mainland. Even being slightly more than 5 miles away, it felt close.
