Boxing Day Flight

Dec 26, 2019

It’s the day after Christmas and it’s stellar…  there were fog warnings throughout the area in the morning, but a quick check ensured it isn’t affecting the airport at Anahuac.  My wife’s daughter had come in from California to spend Christmas with us and she expressed an interest in flying in the Cavalon.  I am, of course, always looking for any excuse to go fly and what better one than to introduce gyro flying to an interested family member!

While there isn’t anything uniquely remarkable about this flight, it is such a great day — weather-wise — and with a great flying companion, it is remarkable for those elements alone.  (It is also likely to be my last flight for 2019.)

I gave her some options and she is curious to see the ocean, so we head south, skirting the eastern shore of Trinity Bay, then fly over the bottom portion of the Bolivar Peninsula before heading back.  Here’s our track:

We did a sharp 360 turn a few minutes after we took off (you can see a slight bump in the track, above) then, later, I slowed down to about 20mph to show her how the gyro wouldn’t stall (where the track color changed, just after we got back over land).  Just before we get back, we dance around a tiny cloud.  It’s a lot of fun!

Here are a few shots I took during the flight, and a quick video at the end — taken by my lovely wife — of our takeoff, landing and taxiing.

Not very interesting, but it does show how nice a day it was:

1 hour 2 minutes in the air, 69 miles covered.

Fuel used:  5 gallons
